SAN FRANCISCO, CA (July 29, 2014) – Littler, the world’s largest employment and labor law practice representing management, named Tanja L. Thompson co-chair of its Traditional Labor Law Practice. Thompson, a shareholder in Littler’s Memphis office, will head the group with existing co-chairs Mark W. Schneider (Minneapolis) and John M. Skonberg (San Francisco).
“Tanja brings a wealth of knowledge and experience in all aspects of traditional labor law and we are excited to have her join the helm with such veteran labor lawyers as Mark and John,” said Tom Bender and Jeremy Roth, co-managing directors of Littler. “Tanja’s impressive track record in representing companies throughout the country in union organizing campaigns and in National Labor Relations Board (NLRB) litigation will be instrumental as we continue to expand one of the firm’s cornerstone practices.”
Traditional labor law has been a core focus of Littler since the firm’s inception nearly 70 years ago. With one of the largest labor management relations legal teams in the country, the firm provides counsel to companies as they devise and implement strategies for lawful union avoidance and for dealing with conventional organizing campaigns and unconventional corporate campaign tactics. Additionally, the practice assists companies in planning for and conducting successful union negotiations using remedies available through the NLRB and the courts.
With an emphasis on advocating for companies in the area of traditional labor law, Thompson represents clients in a broad spectrum of industries ranging from Fortune 500 companies to local employers. She provides management with expertise on remaining union-free and in managing union-represented workplaces. Her NLRB litigation practice includes unfair labor practice charges, as well as pre- and post-election litigation. For unionized clients, she takes a proactive and assertive approach in representing clients’ interests at the bargaining table, in labor arbitrations and in developing training and communication programs to ensure effective management under a collective bargaining agreement.
Thompson’s practice also includes counseling employers on and reducing risks in the areas of daily labor and employment matters, discipline and discharge, policy development and implementation and communication and change strategies, as well as employee surveys and vulnerability assessments and Section 7 activity under the National Labor Relations Act (NLRA).
Active in a number of professional organizations, Thompson is a member of the American Bar Association, the Tennessee Bar Association, the Memphis Bar Association, the CUE Labor Lawyers Advisory Committee and the Labor Relations Advisory Committee. She is the co-chair of the American Bar Association’s Committee on Development of the Law Under the NLRA, a co-editor in chief of Bloomberg BNA’s Developing Labor Law treatise, the former president of the Alumni Chapter of the University of Memphis Law School and a former barrister in the Leo Bearman, Sr. American Inn of Court. Thompson has been recognized for her career achievements by Super Lawyers, the Labor Relations Institute and Martindale-Hubbell.
Thompson received her J.D. from the University of Memphis School of Law and her B.A. from Rhodes College.
