U.S. Customs and Border Protection (“CBP”) issued its FY 2012 annual summary. CBP has inspected over 350 million travelers (a 12% increase since FY 2009); employed a record 21,300 plus border patrol agents; stopped almost 145,000 inadmissible foreign nationals; and enrolled 414,000 new travelers in the Trusted Travelers Programs (Global Entry, SENTRI, NEXUS, and FAST). In addition, attempts to cross the border illegally have decreased 78% since FY 2000. CBP points to high numbers of personnel and new technology as factors in improving efficient entry into the U.S. and the protection of U.S. borders.
