Banning Bullies

There is an emerging trend of lawsuits against employers for workplace bullying, which could evolve into workplace anti-bullying laws. Due to the possible abuses by employees of such laws, Garry Mathiason of Littler's San Francisco office is opposed to governmental interference in workplace bullying. "The best way to forestall such legislation may be for employers to incorporate civility rules in their employment policies, much as the legal profession has rules of civility governing behavior in the courtroom," says Mathiason.
