The EU’s new data protection framework, General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) will become effective as of May 25, 2018. For multinational employers to handle the personal data of the employees of their EU subsidiaries, the GDPR will bring stricter standards for the consent to the use of the personal data, mandatory notification upon data breach, and fines as high as $20 million euros ($22.4 million) or 4 percent of a company’s worldwide gross annual revenue.
