On the Rhode Again: Paid Sick Leave Drought Ends with New Rhode Island Law

Monday, October 30, 2017

  • 10:00 AM - 10:30 AM PDT

On September 28, 2017, Rhode Island Governor Gina Raimondo signed into law a new paid sick and safe leave law. The Healthy and Safe Families and Workplaces Act requires many RI employers to provide paid leave to qualified individuals. It also sets new standards for written Paid Time Off (PTO) and sick leave policies. The law goes into effect on July 1, 2018, giving employers with operations in Rhode Island less than one year to review existing, or create new, policies to comply with the law. During this informative webinar, we will provide Littler’s Top 10 Takeaways from the new law as well as recommendations for ensuring compliance. National and local employers with existing PTO and sick leave policies, as well as those starting from scratch, will benefit from this webinar, which will address questions such as:

  • Who does the law apply to?
  • What are protected uses?
  • What notice and medical certifications are required?
  • What are penalties and damages for non-compliance?
  • How does this new law affect existing leave policies?
  • What are the best strategies for drafting a new leave policy?
