Philadelphia completely overhauled its criminal records screening ordinance in December 2015, providing yet another reminder of the continued difficulty of building a compliant multi-jurisdictional employee background screening program. Philadelphia expects employers to be compliant by March 2016.
At this In-house Counsel Roundtable, participants will share their experiences building an effective employment background screening program, specifically the interplay among:
- Internal screening standards
- Federal and state laws that may require background screening or may prohibit the hiring of employees or contractors with certain criminal or credit histories
- Federal, state, and local laws that mandate certain processes and procedures for conducting the screening
- Federal, state, and local laws that regulate the substance of the decision-making process for screening results
- Contracts with consumer reporting agencies and other third parties
Ben Huggett and Bill Simmons will discuss the complex and ever-evolving web of potential stakeholders, interests, and liability facing employers today.
